In the early 1990s, after the Soviet Union’s fall, about 16,000 artists from the Soviet bloc immigrated to Israel. Those immigrants included dancers, filmmakers, actors, and painters eager to join the local art scene, but less than 20 percent found work in their fields. The Center for the Absorption of New Immigrant Artists was established to support these artists. The documentary “The Art of the Possible,” produced by the Israeli Film Service, highlights the stories of some of these prominent artists and the challenges they faced, despite their well-known works and former acclaim in their home countries.
