The Israeli Archive of Painting and Sculpture presents a series dedicated to Israeli artists, most of whom were new immigrants, and this episode focuses on the paintings of Nessim Zalayet, born in Baghdad.
Nessim Zalayet (1923-2024) holds a place in Israeli abstract art, which flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. Immigrated to Israel on his own in 1951, Zalayet was introduced to Israeli abstract art at the Avni Institute in Tel-Aviv and was influenced by the painters Yehezkel Streichman and Avigdor Steimatzky, members of the "New Horizons" art group, who saw the abstract art as a manifestation of universal truth.
Before immigrating to Israel, Zaliat was an impressionist figurative artist who received his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad. In Israel, he studied at the Art Teachers' College and the Avni Institute, both in Tel Aviv. His choice of abstract art marked a new and unfamiliar path, earning him awards in Israel and abroad. In his works, Zalayet gives expression to universal trends in Western art on the one hand, and to a sense of connection and belonging to the Israeli space and time on the other.
However, he integrates past experiences into his work that shaped the beginning of his career as a young artist in Baghdad. He has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Israel, Europe and the United States.
