In the late 1980s, a delegation of six Australian diplomats arrived in Israel under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joining a long line of foreign politicians documented enjoying the wonders of the Dead Sea. The tour was intended to allow them to gain insight into the young country’s past and present “and to strengthen the friendship bonds between the two distant democracies.” The visitors and their spouses toured the length and breadth of the country for a week, visiting, among other places, Masada, Kibbutz Ein Gedi, and the Dead Sea, in addition to their diplomatic engagements which included meetings with Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and President Shimon Peres regarding a “long-term solution.” This film is aimed at an English-speaking audience to recap the visit and to present its success. As one can often hear from first-time visitors, the Australian diplomats were impressed by the fact that the country was not completely “up in flames” as can be the media impression. David Jull, spokesman for the delegation, also points to the important theological connection that exists between Israel and Australia through its importance to the Christian heritage.
