“Even a windmill can save lives.” Ephraim Agam was born in the Netherlands as Fritz Ah before World War II. During the Six Day War, as an Israeli soldier, he decided to memorialize his father who was murdered in the Holocaust through the consruction of a windmill memorial. After studying windmill building, He came back to Israel and built the Dutch underground mill from recycled materials – bricks from a factory, entrance doors from old barracks. The structure is supported by an iron ring that was used as a turret in a tank. “Anyone who’s gone through the Holocaust is basically a scrap – and these scraps are here given a new life”. Film produced for the Israel Film Service as part of the program “Person and Place”.
