On the fortieth anniversary of the War of Independence, the State of Israel initiated commemorative events for IDF brigades in the war. “Alexandroni Brigade in Post and Operation,” filmed during a memorial conference on May 25, 1988, highlights the Brigade’s activities, documents the meetings between its commanders and soldiers, and includes speeches by politicians who served in the IDF brigades, including Ariel Sharon and Yitzhak Rabin.
In November 1947, the narrow Middle Galilee zone was densely populated, and the Zionist concern was that it would be vulnerable to Arab attempts to block and divide it. Hence, the Alexandroni Brigade was commissioned to protect it.
The Brigade was also called upon to assist in the “Altalena” affair, during which a violent confrontation broke out between the Irgun and Lehi organizations and the ruling Yishuv leadership, threatening to drag the country to a civil war at the height of the Independence War.
The Alexandroni Brigade participated in Operation Nachshon to break the Arab siege of Jerusalem; in the Battle of Mishmar HaEmek, in Operation “Chametz” which was intended to prevent the firing on Tel Aviv and its surroundings from Jaffa, and to open the siege on the main road to the southern areas; the Battle of Kfar Saba with Iraqi soldiers, and the Battle of Tantura, an Arab port city served as a starting point for Arab attacks on the Haifa-Zikhron Yaakov road. About five hundred fighters from the Alexandroni Brigade were killed during these battles, as well as hundreds of Arabs. Those who survived were not allowed to return to their homes.
