A short documentary film produced by the Israeli Film Service in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The film’s purpose is to present the Differentiated Instruction method of teaching and its application in junior high schools in Israel, in order to market it to teaches and educators in junior high schools which have yet to embrace it.
Differentiated Instruction is based on acknowledging the differences between students’ skill and knowledge levels, as well as the fact that standard teaching methods struggle to reach all students effectively. To that end, this method strives to provide tailor-made solutions to students of all levels, with the goal of assisting weaker students and providing stronger students with opportunities to heighten their achievements. This is accomplished by correctly dividing the teacher’s time, performing preliminary assessments, setting up small learning groups according to the students’ level, and putting an emphasis on instilling independent learning skills. The film includes interviews with Nira Altalef, the educator who developed the method, and with teachers who describe their success as a result of using it. Also shown are demonstrations of the various steps and exercises employed in a lesson where Differentiated Instruction is used, as well as descriptions of the training process through which teachers can familiarize themselves with the method and become proficient in it.
