A documentary produced by the Israel Film Service.
Before the era of television in Israel, cinema newsreels were one of the primary sources of news and information for the people of the young state of Israel. Although they may have appeared objective and documentary, they served as a way to convey messages and mobilize citizens to support the Zionist enterprise.
This video explores the significant role newsreel photographers played in shaping public opinion and creating Israel’s collective national memory. They not only functioned as photographers but also as directors and screenwriters of the diary, determining how reality would be reflected.
The documentary includes various diary segments, interviews, and memories of four main diary photographers: David Gurfinkel, Yachin Hirsch, Adam Greenberg, and Nissim (Nicho) Leon, and raises artistic, ethical, and professional issues regarding the roles of diary photographers and the diary itself.
