This film by Boris Maftsir is part of the director’s documentary megaproject, Searching for the Unknown Holocaust, in which he traces the genocide of Jews at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators in the countries that comprised the former USSR.
Through a series of blood-curdling interviews with historians, witnesses, and Holocaust survivors, the film explores the Nazis’ systemic evolution and perfection of their industrial slaughter campaign against occupied Ukraine’s Jewish population, in the aftermath of Operation Barbarossa. At the heart of the film is the mass murder at Babi Yar that has since become the symbol of the Holocaust and Jewish genocide in Ukraine, in which over 33,000 Jews were massacred over the course of two days.
