An utopian road film in which two young friends leave Tel Aviv and embark on a backpacking trip through the neighboring state of Palestine, about five years after it has gained independence. Upon their arrival they are greeted with love and smiles by children holding balloons, but they soon discover that the young nation is dealing with some growing pains.
In the spirit of David Ben-Gurion’s famous saying, “When we have a Jewish thief, a Jewish prostitute, and a Jewish murderer, we will know we have a state,” the two encounter a scheming politician, a local prostitute, and an American journalist. Along the way, they also contend with all the familiar problems of backpackers traveling after their army service.
Filmed during the First Intifada, Zvi Zelinger’s film sought to create a kind of normalization of the emerging Palestinian state.
