In 1948, the majority of Palestinian residents in Haifa’s Wadi Rushmia neighbourhood all fled from their homes. After the war, the area was resettled by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and North Africa, but also a great many Palestinian refugees; some of whom were granted the unconscionable legal status known as ‘Present Absentees.’ Amos Gitai’s film follows three families that live in the neighbourhood next to each other: A Palestinian family, a Jewish family, and a mixed-ethnicity family – a sort of microcosm of the conflict, if you will. In this film, Gitai sets out to create a novel form of film documentation whereby he attempts to shed light on oppositional worldviews by means of focusing on real-life situations, whilst never resorting to external devices such as voiceover narration.
