Tzvia’s husband has been paying her little to no attention. She shares her time between looking after their four children and endlessly wandering Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives cemetery where the two have volunteered to live in an old property, in order to maintain a Jewish presence in the area. Whilst out and about in the graveyard, Tzvia crosses paths with various characters: there’s the Arab maintenance man with whom she has a conversation, a Korean student visiting the grave of Israeli poet, Zelda, and others. One night, Tzvia stumbles upon a parallel world in the cemetery; one that emerges from the shadows after sunset – a world of urges and desires so far removed from her own spiritual way of life. Her encounter with this alternate world both attracts and repels her and soon, also starts to change her.
Mountain, Yaelle Kayam’s directorial debut, was shown at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Orizzonti section, and in the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF’s) Discovery section. It also won multiple awards at the Fribourg International Film Festival and was featured at countless other festivals round the world.
