Joel Silberg’s comedy is a screen adaptation of the hit stage production he directed in 1970 at the Young Theatre, starring Geula Nuni. Like the play, the film was a major box-office success, drawing approximately 630,000 moviegoers.
Zelda, whose name is also that of an Israeli armored personnel carrier, is an overprotective and unstoppable mother. Her son is stationed at a military base in Sinai, and she sets out to bring him food. Her husband, she believes, has been called up for reserve duty somewhere in central Israel – when in fact he is serving as a cook at the very base she is visiting.
Her arrival sets off a chain of mistakes and misunderstandings. Before long, she has the entire base running in circles and even manages to provoke a border incident.
