Director Nissim Notrika’s feature, that was in the running for Best Film at the Jerusalem Film Festival, was inspired by his own biography and tells the story of his difficult childhood. In late 1960s Jerusalem, the Cohens live in abject poverty in the borough of Nahlaot. The two eldest children have long since moved out, and now actively avoid going back to visit their family, leaving only the parents and two youngest kids at home.
Sammy, the father, is a violent drunk who spends his days boozing, gambling, and philandering. Meanwhile, his devoted submissive wife, Malka, fights tooth and nail to keep the family intact. As for the children, Itzik is preparing for his Bar Mitzvah celebrations whereas Micha, the youngest, never seems to say a word – by choice. When Sammy racks up so much debt that he is sent to prison, he asks that Itzik’s Bar Mitzvah be postponed, to allow him to attend once he’s out. Dina, a wealthy woman with whom Sammy has been having an affair, bails him out but there are strings attached: he must be hers and hers only. When Sammy returns to the neighbourhood, Malka will have to step out of her comfort zone for the first time in her life, make some difficult bold choices and at last, take action.
