Director Shai Carmeli-Pollak followed, for over a year, the residents of the Palestinian village of Bil’in in their struggle against the continued construction of the separation barrier and the settlement of Modi’in Illit, built on their land.
He focuses on Wajih Burnat, a father of ten who lost his land, and on Mohammed Khatib, one of the organizers of the protest, who seeks to keep the struggle nonviolent. The barrier, whose construction began in 2002, cuts through the village’s lands, disrupts daily life, leads to the mass uprooting of olive trees, and separates farmers from their fields.
The film portrays the unique bond formed between the villagers and the activists who join their struggle – people from both sides of the divide who unite around a humanitarian idea and refuse to become enemies despite the harsh and seemingly impossible reality.
Bil’in Habibti won the Wolgin Award for Best Documentary at the Jerusalem Film Festival and received a Special Mention in the Amnesty competition at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
