"In the eighth year CE, Ovid wrote the book Metamorphoses, which includes 250 myths. Fifty of them describe rape, after which the violated women change their form and become animals, plants, or stones. One in five women in Western countries experiences rape or incest."
With these words begins Metamorphosis, Netalie Braun’s film, which replaces the prefix meta with the Hebrew word meta (“dead”). The film gives voice to four women who survived rape or incest. Braun interweaves their testimonies with ancient myths from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, attempting to convey the profound physical and psychological transformation women undergo after sexual violence.
Through this juxtaposition, the film also touches on relations between women and men and on “rape culture” and its place in society and literature since ancient times.
The film was screened at festivals in Israel and around the world, and was also presented at the United Nations in a special screening held as part of events marking International Women’s Month.
