Director Shirly Berkovitz’s harrowing documentary tells the story of 20-year-old Romanian-born Leehan who, as a baby, ended up in an orphanage and subsequently adopted by an Israeli couple at the age of four. In Israel, Leehan suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her adoptive mother, until eventually moving in with her adoptive father when she was 11. After his death, she ended up in the care system, going from one foster home to the next, until finally ending up on the streets. The film follows her ongoing battle for survival when, all the while, she has yet to give up on her dream of finding her birth mother. It is a daily, unwavering struggle that finds one living literally from one minute to the next. Berkovitz’s camera follows Leehan into Israel’s darkest, seediest back alleys in her desperate search for the next cigarette, drug hit, or simply a place to rest her head. And whilst Leehan’s dreams keep pushing her forwards and upwards, her harsh reality always seems to drag her all the way back down.
