Filmmaker Oren Carmi’s directorial debut (which, to date, remains his only feature-length film) is a dark and disturbing psychological thriller, albeit packed with humour – a genre seldom explored at the time in Israeli cinema. Carmi wrote, produced, and directed the film, and even features in a small part.
Goldberg, a reclusive IT guy who lives with his dog in Tel Aviv, spends his days looking for love online. His peaceful existence, however, is upended following a chance encounter with Eisenberg – an unhinged, sinister thug who enters his life and starts terrorising him. Goldberg’s hitherto beige and mundane life goes completely off kilter as a result. Their meeting, in turn, sets off a chain of events that only grew increasingly bizarre, with time. Bit by bit, Goldberg is further pulled into Eisenberg’s deeply disturbed orbit – an outlandish, unsettling world whose rules and playbook he will have to learn.
