Twenty-five years after learning that her brother has gone missing during a military operation he was part of (it will later emerge that he is, in fact, deceased), Aya Elia revisits the moment of that fateful knock on the door and the specialist officers who showed up at the family’s doorstep to deliver the heartbreaking news. The film goes back and forth between the director’s own personal tragedy and the national narrative of collective Israeli loss and grief, as captured in the specialist officers’ protocols. This is a rare, intimate glimpse into the work of the people whose words, in one painfully swift and decisive moment, slice through the lives of those for whom there will now forever be a ‘before’ and ‘after’ that dreaded knock on the door. Through a mix of archival footage, testimonials, and scripted scenes, this beautiful aesthetic film captures that moment when this life-changing pain takes root in the family’s DNA, through those who’ve been living with it to the ones who, from now on, will carry it with them forever more.
