Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Christianity’s sanctum sanctorum, is controlled by six Christian sects: Greek Orthodox, Catholic, Armenian, Coptic, St. Thomasian (aka Syrian,) and Ethiopian. The six sects all work to protect and maintain an ancient and ever-so fragile status quo. The holders of the key are [historically] Muslim, but this too is a bone of contention between two rival Muslim families – each of whom claims to have exclusive key custodianship rights. Then there’s Jonny – an Israeli police officer in charge of keeping the peace and quiet at the church – because no one wants see the “axis mundi” become the birthplace of World War III.
Father Samuel, 80, an Armenian Patriarch, arrived at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre when he was only 16. Since then it has been the only home he’s ever known. And when everyone turns in for the night, he leads us through the church’s deserted hallways and empty corridors into the areas one must never enter unaccompanied – and with keys he and no one else holds.
