A big screen adaptation of beloved Israeli poet, Yehuda Amichai’s poem of the same title, commissioned as part of the Sonnet for Yuda film project – an audiovisual homage to the poet’s body-of-work, comprising 13 shorts.
An elderly man and woman step out onto their balcony at the end of the day. They dance to the sound of Billie Holiday. There is romance and intimacy in the air. They sleep together as the day fades, leaving but a trail of lovely orange-hued blotches, dotted across the nascent night sky.
Heavy and tired with a woman on a balcony: “Won’t you stay with me.”
Paths, too, die like people.
In silence or suddenly, snapping.
Won’t you stay with me. I wish to be you.
In this sweltering land,
Words must offer shade.
