Japan 2020
Dir.: Rikiya Imaizumi
W.: Ryuya Wakaba, Moeka Hoshi |
Aoi is dumped by his cheating girlfriend. We follow him, as he goes through the stages of heartbreak – wandering the streets, meeting friends at bars and cafes, going to concerts, meeting a film student that invites him to take part in her new film. It’s not easy being young, not even in Tokyo. Rikiya Imaizumi captively captures the troubles of late adolescence. Our hero is aloof and fails to understand whether every girl who walks into his life is a new love object or a passerby. Apart from him, there are a few other characters, equally miserable, but no-less sympathetic. The delicate tone, the measured rhythm, and the combination of empathy and subtle irony, transform On the Town into a definitive portrait of a generation gone astray. (130 min., Jap., Eng. & Heb. subt.)
