Victor Nord’s film is a modern-day fairytale, set in Jerusalem. Abraham has a garden just by the Old City walls where along with his wife, Sarah, he grows his fruit which he then sells at Jerusalem’s local marketplace. Abraham believes that the Holy Spirit has taken up residence in his garden. He therefore turns down Moshe – a wealthy developer’s generous offer to buy the land off him and turn it into the site of his next property development. A mysterious, mute young woman who is attacked by three bikers manages to flee them and find shelter in the garden. She wanders the place, naked, leading Abraham to believe she is in fact an angel sent by God to watch over his garden. The film, which features some truly breathtaking camerawork, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, though not technically shortlisted. It is also one of American actress, Melanie Griffith’s earliest big screen roles.
