Gingy, a military Battalion Sergeant is sent off to round up all reserve duty soldiers who have been reluctant to report for duty. He picks up Schmil, an erstwhile new immigrant from the US and now, a newly orthodox Jew. The next one to be taken to reserve duty is Schmil’s schul mate – Fishke. The pasty and wimpy recruit rounds off the battalion and along with his new friends, they set off on a mission crossing enemy lines to take on the PLO terrorists’ leader. FIshke Goes to War was given a rightfully icy reception by the local press, however the film was a box office hit in that period of national arrogance between the 1967 Six-Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Cinematically speaking, the film is cringe inducing, technically inept, and full of lowbrow, unsophisticated humour. Therefore, with the perspective of time, the end result is no more than a footnote, at best.
