Written by Hanna Azoulay Hasfari, Sh’Chur focuses on 13-year-old Rachel – a native Israeli girl as she confronts the demons that haunt her traditional, Jewish-Moroccan family in early 1970s Israel. In Rachel’s family, casting a hex (aka, ‘sh’chur’) is the answer to every daily problem – however big or small. Hanna Azoulay Hasfari penned this semi-autobiographical script about herself and her childhood. In it, she boldly tackles questions of individual, female, and communal identity, as well as issues of guilt and self-acceptance. Sh’Chur, that won Best Film at the 1994 Ophir Awards was able to rephrase Israeli society’s identity discourse and in doing so, paved the way for the rise of multicultural, Israeli film.
