When Nina’s husband dies unexpectedly, her younger nephew, Nadav moves in with her. Through his eyes, we experience both the grieving and healing period, and the assortment of characters who go in and out of the two’s lives. Nina’s Tragedies gives us Savi Gabizon at his peak – a brilliant and witty script packed full of surprises, and a directorial vision that successfully ties together the plot’s many novel twists and turns into a wholesome and touching cinematic piece. Just like in his previous films, here too Gabizon moves along the fluid line between fantasy and reality as he undertakes an examination of the male psyche as it relates to its female objects of desire – he is aided by his standout cast’s spectacular performances, including Ayelet Zurer, Yoram Hattab, Alon Aboutboul, and others. David Gurfinkel’s cinematography meanwhile, is a revelation in and of itself, and it is through his lens that a vision of Tel Aviv – unlike it has ever been depicted in film, or ever will be again – is brought to the screen. The result is a second-to-none, highly enjoyable comedy.
